Ten years ago it was felt that passwords would soon become redundant, as fingerprint, voice and face recognition would replace passwords as the standard for identifying people. What we have subsequently witnessed is the opposite, as password use has risen to record levels, because of the huge increase in the number of online services now available. Biometrics have actually gone on to play the role of a secondary form of user authentication, working in conjunction with traditional security such as PINs and passwords.

The proliferation of password use, along with more and more complex password requirements, has placed an impractical demand on users. The consequence of this is users relaxing their password security to deal with password overload. This includes writing down passwords, reusing the same ones across different systems, and using simple and predictable passwords.
